Sometimes You Just Need a S'more

As we approach another shutdown due to COVID-19, I find myself, once again, trying to think positive and remember all that makes me happy. Yes, sometimes it is hard to remember those things, but they are always there if I look hard enough! Today is one of those days when I had to search a little harder for a happy thought, but I found one...s’mores!

I admit, there are days/nights when I crave a s’more. I have been known to make one in the toaster oven just to satisfy that craving. It isn’t quite the same, though. There is nothing better than roasting a marshmallow over an open flame to get that perfect char.

I have fond memories of camping by the beach with my family and roasting marshmallows for s’mores, as well as roasting marshmallows over a backyard barbecue and then making s’mores. I try hard not to burn mine. I search for the perfect flame that will enable my marshmallow to become fluffy and light golden-brown.

For my s’more, I always use two of everything: two graham cracker halves, two marshmallows, and two pieces of chocolate. I really like my chocolate to get “melty,” so I like to layer everything. First the graham cracker, next a piece of chocolate, followed by a hot roasted marshmallow. Then, I sandwich the second piece of chocolate between the two roasted marshmallows. Finally, I sandwich it all together with the other graham cracker half.

After squishing it all together and having the melted chocolate and marshmallow ooze onto my fingertips, I get to enjoy my first mouthwatering bite! Just writing this makes me crave a s’more...In fact, I think I will go make one right now.
